Rahul Gandhi Gets Bail; After Surat Court Sentenced Him Two Years Of Jail in Defamation Case On His ‘Modi Surname’ Remark

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been found guilty and convicted by a Surat court on Thursday which sentenced him to 2 years jail in a criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi Surname’ remark in a rally in Karnataka during the 2019 Lok Sabha election. However, he was granted bail and his sentence was suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision.

Rahul Gandhi was present at the Surat court on Thursday and he was found guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case and sentenced two years jail over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. Complaint was lodge against former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. Mr Gandhi was sentenced under sections 499 and 500 of IPC which deal with criminal defamation, his lawyer Babu Mangukiya said.

However, The Surat court suspended the 2 year jail term sentence for 30 days on Rahul Gandhi’s plea to move an appeal against his conviction.

What is this defamation case

During 2019 Lok Sabha Elections campaign Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar on April 13, 2019, said “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” that he had allegedly remarked. The case against Rahul Gandhi was lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. He alleged that Modi remark of Rahul Gandhi defamed the entire Modi community.
