If you’ve dropped your phone in water, then it is important to immediately prevent additional damage before you attempt any fixes. Go through this article and some ways to fix your phone if that dropped in water.
If your phone have accidentally fell into the water, then you need to do two things. The first, and most important thing is to shut the phone off before any additional damage occurs. The second you need to do is to dry the phone off. Never leave a phone on, or turn it back on, if there are still any traces of water inside it.
Turn Off the Phone
If you have accidentally dropped your phone in water, before you do anything else, first shut the phone off. As long as the phone remains on, there’s a constantly increasing the chances that it will be permanently damage your phone.
By holding the side button and volume down or holding the sleep/wake button, you can turn off an iPhone, and in Android you can turn it off by holding the power button.
Remove the Phone Case
If your phone has a case, then remove it first. The phone case may trap water against the body of the phone, where it can seep inside the device.
Remove the SIM Card
By using a paperclip or SIM tray removal tool you can pop out the tray and remove the card. Pat the SIM card dry, and set it aside.
Remove the Battery
If you are using the phone that has a removable battery, then immediately remove it. Removing battery will also effectively turn the phone off if you weren’t able to do so through other way. Remove the battery and pat the battery dry and set it aside. Leave the battery cover off as well, as that will make it easier for the phone to dry out. But, your phone have battery that aren’t easily accessible or if your battery isn’t removable, then you can skip this step.
Remove Anything Else You Can
If your phone has an internal stylus or any other compartments or covers, then remove them. As much as possible you want to open up the phone to let it dry.
Wipe the Phone Dry
You can remove any remaining water from the outside of the phone, if water penetrating the interior of the phone, then their will be chances of water damage. So, don’t leave any water on the phone that could get inside. If possible, you can use a soft microfiber cloth to clean your phone to avoid scratching the screen.
Gently Shake the Phone
To get water out of the charging port, speakers, physical buttons, headphone jack, SIM card slot, and any other openings, you can hold the phone securely, and shake it gently. If any water comes out, then wipe it out with a soft microfiber cloth.
Place the Phone in a Drying Agent
Do not use any heating resources like hairdryer, oven, or microwave to dry a phone. Heating your phone can cause more damage to it. If you have access to silica gel, which comes in little packets with many new electronics, you can use that. If you don’t find that then, you can use desiccants like DampRid that available at most of the grocery stores.
Leave Your Phone Alone for 24 to 48 hours
Leave your phone in the absorbent substance for at least 24 hours. If you notice that the absorbent substance that you’re using has taken on a lot of water, then replace it with fresh material if possible. Do not leave your phone in a humid area. If the air is humid, the water in the phone won’t be evaporate.
Check to See if the Phone Works
After 24 to 48 hours, you can put the battery back in and check to see if your phone works. If the phone does work, you should consider backing up your photos and other data immediately, just in case the phone suffered lasting damage.
If the phone doesn’t work after you’ve allowed it to fully dry, then you can take it to the service center. A professional may be able to retrieve your data from the phone though, so your photos and videos may not be lost. If you have an iPhone, then Apple also accepts water-damaged phones as trade-ins at a reduced value, so that may be an option can help you get a new phone without paying full price.
