Less than ten days after BSKY was shut down and the ‘Ayushman card’ was implemented in the state, patients and their relatives are already facing untold problems. The ongoing propaganda that the state government’s newly launched Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana and the central government’s Ayushman Bharat will provide double benefits has been proven false. While patients are lining up at hospitals to register, allegations of patients being exploited in private hospitals outside Odisha are doing the rounds on social media.
Discontent is Growing Among People
Not only admission, but also discharge is not easy. Patients have to have their photos taken, all the papers are being verified, registration has to be done repeatedly, people are getting confused in OTP issue. A lot of time is wasting in this process. Earlier, BSKY did not have these problems. Admission and discharge were done immediately. Before, the verification of any family member was done. But now verification of patient is mandatory regardless of the condition of the patient. On the other hand, discrepancies in the treatment package are creating another complex problem. Since two plans are available on one card, there is no end to confusion about who will receive treatment from which plan.
Other than that Ayushman Bharat requires prior approval for treatment. But since there is no such condition in BSKY, people have been getting treatment without any hindrance. People have expressed concerns that patient exploitation will increase as many types of treatment are excluded from it. On the other hand, the private hospital association has also expressed its displeasure over this and demanded immediate intervention from the government.
Transparency and hassle-free treatment were the main principles at BSKY. The treatment started by simply presenting the card at the hospital and having the family member’s eyes scanned. The treatment costs were decided considering the need and cost. That is why there were no complaints about BSKY. But the more complicated the system that has been introduced in Ayushman, the more painful it has become for the patients.
