After India, Nepal’s government decided to ban popular social media app TikTok due to its negative social impact.

According to a report by The Kathmandu Post, On November 13th, Nepal officially decided to ban TikTok following a cabinet meeting held with several government executives. The Nepal government said that a large section of the society criticised TikTok for encouraging a tendency of hate speech.

The decision to ban Tik Tok comes days after the country introduced a new rule that made it mandatory for social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), YouTube, TikTok and others to set up their liaison offices in the country.

Nepal’s Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, spoke to various media professional about the situation. Speaking to BBC Nepali, Sharma said that “the platform spread malicious content.” According to some local media reports, more than 1,600 TikTok-related cyber crime cases have been registered over the last four years in Nepal. It is not yet known when the ban will be implemented.

When TikTok was launched, initially it has gained more popularity worldwide. After getting loved massively, it started facing increased scrutiny from multiple nations. Due to security concern, this Chinese tech company owned ByteDance, has already been banned either partially or completely by other countries. After it was banned in India back in 2020 along with other Chinese apps, now Nepal also decided to ban Tik Tok
