When you are walking down the street, enjoying the cool breeze during monsoon and suddenly, you feel the raindrops, the first thing you might do is to protect yourself. But, if you forgot to take your earphones out of your ears and get soaked in the rain, then depending on the severity of the soaking, there’s an even chance that you can save your headphones from damage. Go through this article and know how you can deal with when your earphones or headphones get soaked in water and how to avoid the damage.
First Steps
- When you see your headphones or earphones are wet, turn them off (if they can) and try to safely disassemble them.
- Ear tips and ear cups should be removed, in the case of wired headphones disconnect any cables if possible.
- Then with a clean rag try to dry all the components, preferably use a lint-free cloth.
- Don’t use tissue paper as the paper can shred and stick inside where you don’t want them to be embedded.
- If possible, try to shake the headphones vigorously to dislodge any water, if stuck inside.
- You can also try to push water out blow through its openings. But, remember one thing do not blow too hard, you might cause further damage to the audio driver or mic.
- Once this is done, you can leave the headphones or earphones out to dry in a clean, dry place.
Important :
Do not use any heating agent such as heat in an oven or with a hairdryer. You can also don’t dunking them to absorb heat. Headphones are made of extremely delicate materials, and a lot of the components are held together with glue. Also the wireless headphones have batteries, which should not overheat. Heat can cause more damage to your earphones than the water.
Do Nothing for Few Days
- After this is done, don’t touch the headphones or don’t try to turn them on, and leave them for few days till you’re absolutely sure that they are dry and that there is not a drop of moisture in them.
- After make sure the headphones or earphones are dry, reassemble it. In the case of wireless headphones, check for any bloating or swelling around the battery area. If you see any bloating then, then this is usually a clear indicator of a damaged battery, and it means your headphones are dead, or worse, are going to explode.
- If you see everything is fine, then connect the headphones to an audio source and play some audio, preferably a sound sweep. If all seems fine, then put them in your ears to check for quality and functionality.
In Case of Soaked in Any Sugary or Salty Lquid
Incase your headphones got soaked in some kind of sugary or salty liquid, then it’s most likely to be dead because salts and sugars can attach in to your headphones electronic circuits and short them. At this point, you can try the above steps anyway, but with one change that rinse your headphones with clean water that is distilled water not the tap water before drying them. If the salts or sugars liquid didn’t damage the headphones already beyond repair, then their will some chances that your set is recoverable.
One thing you should note that even though some earphones and headphones have an IP rating for dust and splash resistance, but they neither guaranteed you that your headphones will be safe from water, nor that will be covered under warranty in the case of water damage.
