For this reason Instagram is making an effort to make it harder for those who are not followed you, but still bombard you with unwanted DM requests. As a result of testing the feature in June, Instagram only allows individuals those who you don’t follow to submit a one-message invite before they may start chatting with. This message request only contain text, so that you should no longer receive any unwanted images, videos, or voice messages response to message requests. Before Instagram used to allow users to send an unlimited message requests.
Now, Instagram users can no longer send you several messages before you grant permission to their message request to connect. In the Requests button, all the message requests will be kept and that you can found above your inbox in the DM tab on Instagram. But one thing you have to keep in mind that users send a request before messaging you, when your privacy settings is on.
Cindy Southworth, Meta’s head of women’s safety, says in a statement that, “We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox.” With this new features users can get rid from receiving several messages, photos, or videos from people they don’t follow until they have accept to the message request.
Meta began testing the function as part of a larger effort to promote safety of users. Meta also included new messaging precautions on Instagram and rolling out stronger parental controls that give parents a more in-depth view of what their child is doing on Instagram and Messenger app.
