Terrorists hijack train in Pakistan. Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has hijacked the Jaffar Express in Balochistan, Pakistan. Not only this, the Baloch army has taken all the passengers on the train hostage. The Baloch Liberation Army has given information about the train hijacking on social media. Several army officers are reported to be among the 100 passengers. The Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the hijacking. The train was en route from Quetta to Peshawar when it was hijacked. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which seeks Balochistan’s independence from Pakistan, said in a statement that it had hijacked a train and we have taken the passengers hostage.

Railway officials told news agency Reuters that the Jaffar Express, carrying about 400 passengers in nine coaches, was travelling from Quetta in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when it was shot at. In such a situation, the question now arises as to who are these Baloch people who have become a problem for the Pakistani government and its army.

Who are the Baloch?

Baloch militants are an ethnic group from the Balochistan region, which spans Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province, but it is also one of its most sparsely populated and poorest. The Baloch people have a unique language (Balochi), culture, and tribal traditions. Their identity is distinct from other ethnic groups such as the Punjabis, Sindhis, and Pashtuns.

  • Economic Grievances: Despite being rich in natural resources (gas, minerals, etc.), Balochistan is underdeveloped and the locals feel exploited by the central government.

  • Baloch Insurgency: Several Baloch nationalist and separatist groups, such as the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), have been fighting for greater autonomy or independence from Pakistan since the early 2000s.
