Buying Gold Jewellery? Things to Check Before Buying Gold or Silver Jewellery

When buying gold or silver jewellery, most of the consumers focus primarily on its shine, design and price. These are important, but checking the purity of gold or silver is more important.
When buying gold jewellery, relying solely on the ‘Hallmark’ logo can be dangerous. It is not right to blindly trust the BIS logo on any shop. According to Vinod Kumar, president of the Pataliputra Sarafa Sangh or Gold Merchants Association, the number of jewellery shops registered with BIS is currently less than 50% of the total number of shops.
Therefore, before buying anything, consumers should check whether the shop they are buying gold from adheres to BIS standards or not. The Bureau of Indian Standards has formulated several guidelines for hallmarking gold jewellery. To avoid fraud, consumers need to keep in mind some important points.
Things to Check Before Buying Gold or Silver Jewellery
Check Registration Certificate of the Shop
It is mandatory for shopkeepers to display their registration certificate at a prominent place within the shop. Customers should ensure to check it before making any purchase. Apart from this, registered shops also provide information and pamphlets regarding hallmarking rules, which customers can read to be aware of their rights.
Always Check the HUID Number
Instead of just looking for the hallmark mark, you should make sure that the gold jewellery has the ‘HUID-Hallmark Unique Identification’ number. This is a unique alphanumeric identification code that contains all the details about that particular piece of jewellery.
Check Through ‘BIS Care App’
Now consumers no longer have to rely solely on the shopkeeper. For this, ‘BIS Care App’ has been made available by ‘Bureau of Indian Standards’. By downloading this app and entering the HUID number of the jewellery, the purity, weight and other details of that jewellery will be known. Apart from this, this app also shows the photos of the hallmarked jewellery, which helps in identifying the particular jewellery correctly.
Avoid the Lure of Cheap Offers and Attractive Deals
Often, consumers rush into buying gold, lured by low prices, attractive offers or other such enticements, which increases the risk of falling victim to fraud. Do not fall for such temptations, instead, carefully check the BIS registration of the shop, the hallmark on the jewellery and the HUID number before making a purchase.
