However, individuals who are travelling abroad for the first time may be don’t know about the correct way to apply for a passport online.

How to Apply for a Passport Online?
- To apply passport for online, go to the official Passport Seva website and register yourself. If you have already your account, then log in to your existing account.
- After making your account, now you can click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/ Re-issue of Passport”. To apply for a passport online under the “Fresh Passport” category, you must not own an existing Indian passport.
- Carefully, fill the accurate details in the passport online application form and click on “Submit”.
- After that go back to the home page and select “View Saved/Submitted Applications”.
- From “View Saved/ Submitted Applications” now you can click on “Pay and Schedule Appointment” and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra of your choice and make the payment online or offline by select and proceed.
- You can download the copy of the application receipt with your application reference number by clicking on ‘Print Application Receipt’ after completing the process.
- Next, you will receive an SMS with your appointment details. When you visit to the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date, this SMS will act as proof of your appointment.
- Before visit to the Passport Seva Kendra make sure to carry all original documents as proof of your eligibility.
Documents Required for Passport Application
To apply for a new passport following documents are needed.
Proof of present address, (any from the following)
- Adhaar card
- Voter ID card
- Any utility bill.
- Income tax assessment order,
- Rent agreement
- Parent’s passport copy in case of minors
Proof of Date of Birth (any from the following)
- Birth certificate
- Adhaar card
- Voter ID card
- PAN card
Documentary proof for any of the Non-ECR (previously ECNR) categories

Passport Application Processing Time
- Through speed post, India Post dispatch Passports to the applicant address mentioned in their application form while applying for their passport.
- For general passport processing time is 30 to 45 days. However, applications made under the Tatkal mode passport application, then processing time is 7 to 14 days.
- Tracking Utility feature available on the India Post’s Speed post portal, one can track the delivery status of their passport.
- if you urgently need your passport, then you can submit an application stating its reason to the nearest RPO. After considering your request, the Regional Officer will decide its delivery time.
Eligibility for Passport Application
- For a successful passport application, one must meet the following eligibility criteria.
- Indian citizens with 18 years old and above can apply for a passport.
- Children below 18 can apply for a passport that valid for 5 years or till they turn 18.
- Children aged between the 15 and 18 years can get a valid passport for 10yrs. Parents can also opt for a passport for their children, which is valid till they turn 18.
Validity and Expiry of a Passport
- A normal passport is valid for 10 years from the date it is issued and generally consists of 36/60 pages.
- Children below the age of 18, the validity of a passport is 5 years.
- Minors aged between the 15 and 18 years can get a valid passport for 10yrs. Furthermore, they can go for a passport which is valid till they turn 18.
