Railway’s New Announcement: Now you Can’t Charge your Phone on Trains!

If you frequently travel by train, here is an important update for you. Before traveling at night, make sure to fully charge your phone or laptop, as charging point facilities on trains will be switched off from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. To ensure passenger safety, the Railway Board has announced this major decision and instructed all zonal railways to strictly enforce the rule. The directive emphasizes that charging ports must remain completely disabled during the specified hours, with no exceptions.
On 25 October 2026, a passenger was charging his power bank while travelling on the Mumbai-Howrah train, when it exploded. Immediately after the explosion, smoke spread throughout the entire boggie, causing a lot of inconvenience to the passengers. Fortunately, a major accident was averted. Learning from this incident, Indian Railways has issued these strict instructions.
The Railway Board has directed the Zonal Railways to educate and train the staff to ensure that the charging points in all the coaches remain closed during these six hours.
When Was this Order Issued Earlier?
This is not the first time that the Railways has ordered to keep charging points closed during the night. Earlier, on 19 June 2014, an order was issued to keep charging points closed from 11 pm to 5 am. In March 2021, the Railways had asked the Railways to strictly follow this.
From March 16 of the same year, Western Railways had started disconnecting the power supply of charging points at specified times. Following the power bank incident, a recent order has reiterated this old rule. Passengers have been advised to charge their phones and other essential electronic devices before embarking on a night journey.
