There is hope for lakhs of investors hoping to get their deposits back from Sahara Group cooperative societies. The central government has reactivated the Sahara Refund Portal. This will allow processing of around 2 million pending claims and further payment to eligible investors.
Central Government has Reactivated the Sahara Refund Portal
The central government has reactivated the Sahara Refund Portal. The relaunch of the portal is expected to expedite the processing of applications and payments to the remaining eligible claimants. This will allow processing of around 2 million pending claims and further payment to eligible investors. The claims of eligible depositors of four cooperative societies of Sahara Group are being processed through the refund portal. These include Sahara Credit Cooperative Society, Saharayan Universal Multipurpose Society, Hamara India Credit Cooperative Society and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society.
According to the Ministry of Co-operation, a total of Rs 9,267 crore has been refunded to about 42 lakh depositors under the refund process so far. The amount has been directly transferred to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of the depositors.
Why the Sahara Refund Process was Affected?
The refund process was hampered for some time due to various issues. Sahara Group affiliated cooperatives faced challenges such as information technology systems, required licenses, maintenance of computers and other equipment, and staff shortage. Due to this, the verification and payment of claims did not proceed smoothly.
According to the ministry, the premises of Sahara Societies were sealed in November 2025 due to some issues not directly related to these cooperative societies. This subsequently affected the regular functioning of the societies and affected refund-related activities. The Ministry of Cooperatives intervened and resolved the technical and administrative issues, after which the portal was reactivated.
Sahara Refund Payment will be Made After Aadhaar Identification
The refund system has been designed to be online and paperless. The applicant depositor is identified through Aadhaar. Then the name, membership information and bank account details are matched with the records of the concerned cooperative society. The deposit certificate of the depositor and other necessary documents are also verified as per the prescribed procedure. After the verification process is completed, the amount is transferred to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the eligible claimant.
What to Do if There are Errors in the Old Application?
Those who have already applied and identified errors in their claims can use the resubmission portal to correct them. Investors are advised to use only the official CRCS-Sahara refund portal to submit new claims.
Beware of Fraudulent Websites and Agents
The government has advised investors to be wary of unauthorized websites, agents and misleading claims. It is important to provide all required documents and enter correct bank account information while applying or reapplying. Providing correct information will avoid unnecessary hassles in verifying the claim and ensure timely payment if eligible.
Sahara Refund Portal Launched in July 2023
Following the Supreme Court’s order, the Sahara Refund Portal was launched in July 2023. Its objective is to identify genuine and eligible depositors on the basis of the records and available documents of the cooperative society and provide a mechanism for refunding their deposits.
