Distributors supplying cooking gas (LPG) across the country have issued a stern warning to the central government. The All India LPG Distributors’ Association announced that it will go on an indefinite nationwide strike if their key demands are not met within the next three months. This may lead to disruption in the supply of cooking gas across the country.

The decision was taken during a national conference held in Bhopal, in which LPG distributors from across the country participated. Mahasangh President B. S. Sharma attended the conference. Mr Sharma said that their main demand is an increase in commission on LPG distribution, which is not commensurate with the current operating costs.

What are the Main Demands of the Distributors?

Below are the key issues have been raised in the demand letter sent by the Federation to the Union Government and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas:

  • Increase in Delivery Commission

The current commission that LPG distributors receive per cylinder does not cover their operating costs – such as delivery staff salaries, transportation, maintenance and security costs. Distributors are demanding that this commission should be at least ₹150 per cylinder.

  • Ban on Compulsory Supply of Non-domestic Gas Cylinders

Distributors have alleged that oil companies are sending non-domestic (commercial) LPG cylinders to distributors without any demand, thereby creating unnecessary burden and legal complications on them. The federation has demanded an immediate end to this.

  • Problems Related to Ujjwala Yojana

Distributors said that there are several administrative hurdles under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, such as delays in supply of LPG cylinders, irregular payments and lack of coordination at the ground level, which are affecting the implementation of the scheme.

The Government was Given an Ultimatum

Mr B. S. Sharma said, “We have informed the ministry about our problems many times, but now our patience is running out. If the government does not take strong steps within three months, we will be forced to go on an indefinite strike across the country.”
