India is currently facing a shortage of Diet Coke, with supply issues being reported across key cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad and Pune started in April. The Diet Coke shortage in India is caused by a severe shortage of aluminum cans, higher prices, and shipping route blockages.

Diet Coke Shortage in India

The Diet Coke Shortage India faced since April 2026 came from an aluminium can crunch. The scarcity is attributed to global aluminum challenges, logistical disruptions, and regulatory packaging changes. Before the crisis, Diet Coke in India sells only in aluminium cans, with no plastic or glass option.

Unavailable on Quick Commerce Platforms

The widely loved zero-sugar drink has gone out of stock on several quick commerce platforms and is also missing from shelves in multiple retail stores and restaurants. Popular delivery app like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart are displaying the beverage as unavailable in many areas, leaving regular consumers frustrated. Not only online platforms but offline stores are also finding it difficult to keep the product in stock.

Causes of the Shortage

1. Middle East Conflict: The war involving Iran and Israel blocked trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz. This stopped aluminum shipments from the Gulf region.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical supply route for these aluminum cans and related raw materials to travel to India, has virtually closed again with commercial traffic heavily disrupted, following the collapse of an interim truce meant to end the Iran conflict.

2. Packaging Limits: In India, Diet Coke is sold almost entirely in aluminium cans rather than plastic bottles. This made it harder to find on store shelves. Due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has choked its supply chain

3. Higher Costs: Coca-Cola started buying more expensive cans from Southeast Asia. Prices for a can rose by more than 10%, moving from around ₹40 to ₹50.

Its most popular variant in India is the 300 ml can, priced at Rs 40. Coca-Cola has now rolled out 330 ml cans of Diet Coke in India for Rs 50, as the smaller ones are in tight supply, the sources said, adding the decision was made to account for higher costs.

4. Alternative Packaging: Bottlers started using older 200 ml glass bottles for Diet Coke to help fix the empty shelves.

Unlike most other markets, Diet Coke is sold mostly in cans in India, making it more vulnerable to disruptions. Coca-Cola India responded to the Diet Coke Shortage India faced by bringing the drink back in 200 mL glass bottles across parts of the country, a first for a market that had only sold it in cans. The company also pushed Coke Zero harder, since it sells in plastic bottles and stayed available.
