Passengers have to show their passports and tickets repeatedly at the airport to enter, pass through security, and board international flights. However, from November 1st, the hassle of standing in long queues to show these documents will end. The central government is expanding the scope of the Digi Yatra facility to international flights. While it has been strictly for domestic travel since 2022, Digi Yatra is launching international passenger trials starting tomorrow, November 1, 2026. The trial will begin at seven major airports across India and will run through December.
Under this system, your passport and visa remain mandatory. Similarly, airlines will conduct paper checks, security procedures, and immigration checks as in the past. Likewise, upon arrival abroad, the entry rules and laws of the destination country will apply.

What is Digi Yatra?
Digi Yatra is a voluntary, paperless, and contactless airport processing initiative in India introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and powered by the DigiYatra Foundation.
- Phase 1 Launch: Launched on December 1, 2022, across three domestic airports: New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi.
- Expansion: Expanded to Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Vijayawada in April 2023.
- Current Status: Operates across 39 domestic airports and supports 11 domestic airlines, serving over 2.65 crore passengers (accounting for approximately 30% of domestic air travelers in India).
Prerequisites for International Trials
To participate in the international Digi Yatra trial, passengers must meet two conditions:
- Hold a chip-embedded e-passport.
- Fly with Air India or IndiGo, as these two airlines are participating in the initial trial.
How Digi Yatra Works
- Sign Up: Download the DigiYatra app on Android or iOS and register using your mobile number and OTP.
- Identity Verification: Verify your identity using DigiLocker.
- Capture Photo: Upload a clear, well-lit selfie matching your profile photo.
- Link Travel Documents: Scan or upload your flight’s boarding pass into the app prior to arriving at the airport.
- Seamless Entry: Look into the facial recognition e-gate cameras at airport entry points and checkpoints to pass through automatically.
