What Happens if Your Valuables Goes Missing or Gets Stolen From Bank Locker?

Just as we trust banks to keep our money safe, bank lockers are also trusted to keep our gold and silver jewelry safe. Many feel bank locker as one of the safest places to keep jewellery and other valuables. If valuables disappear from a locker, is the bank automatically responsible for the loss?
Who is Responsible for the Items Kept in the Bank Locker?
If you are sure that by keeping your gold, silver or any other valuable item in a bank locker, the bank is now responsible for it, then this idea is not correct. The bank locker facility is mainly a storage service. Therefore, the bank does not take full responsibility for the items kept in the locker.
However, if jewellery stored in a locker is stolen, the bank is not completely exempt from liability. If the incident occurs due to reasons such as the bank’s negligence, security flaws or negligence of employees, the bank may be liable as per RBI rules. In such cases, the compensation paid by the bank can be up to 100 times the annual rent of the locker. In other words, it is not right to assume that all responsibility lies with the bank after keeping the jewelry in the locker. It is also important to keep the bill, photo, and ownership certificate of the jewelry safe.
What Does RBI Rule Say About Valuables Stolen or Lost from a Bank Locker?
Under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, a bank is liable for lost or stolen locker valuables only if the loss happens due to its own fault, negligence, or staff fraud. However, the bank’s maximum payout is strictly capped at 100 times the annual rent of that locker, no matter how much value was inside.
When the Bank is Responsible
- The bank must pay compensation if valuables go missing due to:Fire, building collapse, theft, robbery, or burglary caused by weak bank security.
- Fraud or cheating committed by a bank employee.
- Failure to maintain proper safety systems, cameras, or access logs.
When the Bank is NOT Responsible
- The bank does not have to pay anything if the loss is caused by any natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, or lightning strikes.
- Your own personal carelessness or mistake.
