Aadhaar card has become an essential identity document in India, required for everyone from children to the elderly. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued an important deadline for updating children’s Aadhaar details: if your child is between 5 and 17 years old, their mandatory biometric update must be completed before September 30, 2026.
Aadhaar Update for Children Aged 5 to 17
According to the Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI), mandatory biometric updating of children between the ages of 5 and 17 can now be done free of cost within a specified period. However, after the expiry of this facility, a standard fee will be charged as per UIDAI guidelines.
Biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans is not captured when generating an Aadhaar card for a child under five. Therefore, parents must complete a child’s biometrics update for the first time after they turn five, followed by a second mandatory update when they reach 15.
Where to Update Your Child’s Aadhaar
Parents or guardians can visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Common Service Centre (CSC) for the update. Additionally, special camps are being organized across many schools; UIDAI reports that biometrics for over 2 crore children have already been updated in more than 1.56 lakh schools under this campaign.
What Happens if You Don’t Update?
Updating Aadhaar biometrics on time prevents verification issues during school or college admissions, scholarship applications, government scheme benefits, and competitive exams such as NEET, JEE, and CUET. Parents are strongly advised to complete their child’s biometric update before the September 30 deadline.
