The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended replacing the two-decade-old National Numbering System. After the implementation of this recommendation, the landline telephone numbers of the entire country will change. TRAI said in its release that as the number of mobile phones and connected devices in the country is increasing, there is a need to change the numbering system so that reliable telecom services can be made available to all.
There will be a Change in the National Numbering System
According to the feedback received from telecom operators and experts, the telecom regulator has taken a big decision.The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended replacing the two-decade-old National Numbering System.
TRAI’s recommendation comes after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a directive in 2022, asking it to fix the fixed line number and its telecom code. TRAI said in its recommendation that fixed line i.e. landline numbering system needs to be made 10 digits like mobile. This allows for optimal utilization of available numbers. Apart from this, all land lines need to be set to ‘zero’ to call a landline. However, the process of dialing by mobile will remain the same.
6 Month Deadline to Comply with the Telecom Regulatory Changes
Telecom companies have been given six months to comply with the telecom regulatory changes. Apart from this, there are plans to introduce fixed line portability system like mobile in the next 5 years.TRAI has ordered the roll out of Caller ID Name Presentation Service (CNAP) to eliminate fraudulent calls. Telecom companies will implement this new system quickly.
The telecom regulator said that 13 digit numbers will be issued for Machine-to-Machine (MTM) devices, which are currently in 10 digit numbers. Also, special short codes for emergency numbers will be freed so that the government can use them if needed. It will be audited from time to time.
