Millions of people travel on the national highways and expressways daily, paying toll tax to ensure seamless transit. To improve the commuting experience, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways continuously updates toll guidelines. In its latest major initiative, the government has revised the toll-exemption FASTag rules for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). The new revised rules have come into effect from this October.

New FASTag Rule for Persons with Disabilities

The government has revised the toll-exemption FASTag rules for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). The main objective of this update is to make passing through toll plazas easier and hassle-free for persons with disabilities. Previously, the toll-free FASTag issued to differently-abled individuals had to be renewed every year. Now, beneficiaries will no longer need to go through this repetitive renewal process. Under the Ministry’s new guidelines, the validity of a FASTag for differently-abled individuals will now be determined based on their percentage of disability.

As per the old rules, the differently-abled individuals had to apply for renewal every year to continue their expired FASTag. This resulted in a lot of paperwork and wastage of time. As per the new rules, there will be no need to renew it every year as the validity will be valid for 3 or 5 years. After the validity period expires, the application for renewal will have to be made online or offline along with the required documents.

  • 70% to 100% Disability: The validity of the exempted FASTag provided to eligible persons in this category will be for 5 years.
  • More than 40% but less than 70% Disability: The validity of FASTag for eligible persons in this category will be for 3 years.

The Ministry of Road Transport has clarified that only eligible persons with a government-approved disability certificate will be eligible for this exemption. In addition, the vehicle must be registered in the name of the Divyangjan or specially registered for their use. The benefit of toll exemption will be available only to those vehicles which have this special FASTag affixed. If any ineligible person is found misusing it, the FASTag can be blacklisted immediately.
