Like any other courier companies, the Indian Railways is now preparing to pick up parcels from your doorstep and deliver them directly to your given address. You will no longer have to go to the railway station to book or pick up your goods. The railways will pick up your parcel from your home and deliver it within the specified time. Customers can book and pay online through the railways’ mobile app. This service will be much cheaper than domestic courier companies. This will benefit small traders and online shoppers as well.
The pilot project of this railways courier scheme has been successful. Now this service will be started in eight cities of the country including Delhi and Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune.
Indian Railways to Deliver Parcels at Home
Railways has developed ‘Rail Parcel App – Ghar Se Ghar Tak’ for its courier service. It is designed as an online platform for domestic courier companies. It will connect customers directly with the companies that transport goods. Customers can book and pay online through the app itself. This will eliminate the hassle of going to the station to pick up the parcel or filling out forms the old-fashioned way.
In this facility of railway parcel, the companies will first collect the goods from the customer’s house and take them to the booked railway station. From there, the railway will transport the goods to the destination station through trains. After that, another courier company from that station will deliver the goods to the specified address.
For example, if you have booked goods from Delhi to Kanpur, then the company will pick up the goods from your home and bring them to the New Delhi railway station. From there, the goods will reach Kanpur by train. From there, the company will deliver them to the specified address in Kanpur. The logistics company will also take care of the packaging and other necessary care of the customer’s goods.
Parcel bookings will have to be done 15 days in advance. The booking process will start 15 days before the train departure. Customers can book up to 24 hours before the train departure. Similarly, the logistics company will have to hand over the parcel to the railway staff one hour before the train departure.
